CAA Takes Action Against Holiday Pricing Abuses

On April 11, Sri Lanka – The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) conducted 1,200 raids recently as part of an intensive inspection campaign initiated during the festival period.

The CAA mentioned that increased crackdowns will persist over the next few days, particularly targeting those dealing with essential commodities. Authorities have been directed to enforce actions against merchants for various infractions such as:

Not displaying prices

Selling items at prices higher than those indicated

Altering product information

Selling expired goods

Failing to issue receipts

Imposing conditions on purchases

Hoarding goods

Refusing to sell goods

Deceiving customers using deceptive discounts and marketing promotions

Inspections are taking place even on holidays and at nighttime. Particular focus is being placed on vendors who sell Samba and Kiri Samba rice, along with eggs and chickens, at increased prices during the festive season.

The CAA stressed that stringent legal measures will be enforced against those who violate the rules.

Moreover, an initiative has been launched to oversee stores located at intercity bus terminals, with emphasis on addressing problems like pricing inaccuracies, excessive markups, and the distribution of outdated or incorrectly marked products.
