On episode 10 of SBS's 'Jungle Rice 2 - Peruvab,' which was broadcasted on the 10th, 'Peruz' encountered the most significant challenges as they approached the conclusion of their lengthy adventure.
Today marks the final day for Peruvian rice. Jeon Hyun-moo gathered everyone and said, "Since I haven’t done much for you all, consider this my treat for our team dinner tonight."
Choi Daniel queried, “Why didn’t you reach out to me last week?” To which Jeon Hyun-moo quipped, "The shoot wrapped up two hours early since Choi Daniel wasn’t around last week." Responding to this, Choi Hyun-seok remarked with a grin, "I felt somewhat uneasy though. Seems like I’m considered a bit of an idiot for lacking this buddy,” he added jovially.
Choi Hyun-suk and Ryu Soo-yong opted to prepare a multi-course dinner for 20 guests. Throughout the process, from starter to entrée, they collaborated closely. While Ryu Soo-yong took charge of preparing the braised short ribs, Choi Hyun-suk focused on making the risotto.
However, everybody felt awkward due to the unexpected release from the pressure cooker—a genuine crisis. The area was filled with a significant amount of steam, causing Ryu Soo-young to freeze. He feared that at any instant, an overwhelming number of thoughts would flood his mind.
Ryu Soo-young couldn’t approach the primary course, which would turn into a bubble once the simmered beef short ribs caught fire. He mentioned this could explode as he moved closer to inspect. After placing some roofing tiles over the lid, the escaping steam slowly diminished.
Once the pressure eased, Ryu Soo-young promptly inspected the simmered beef short ribs. Initially, the appearance met his approval, and Ryu Soo-young cautiously took a bite. With evident delight, he remarked, “This is wonderful.”
Daniel Choi opted to try the rich risotto and savory braised short ribs for the first time. His brother Hyun-seok explained, "Daniel speaks his mind honestly and directly," which sheds light on why this was significant.
Daniel Choi, after taking a bite, commented, “This is incredibly tasty. It’s strange eating alone, yet this dish tastes best when shared.” Ryu Soo-young added tearfully, saying, “My eyes are watering just thinking about how my simple cooking has been combined with one prepared by someone who has spent thirty years as a chef; it deeply touched me.” Then, Choi Hyunsuk chimed in hurriedly, urging them to laugh things off with, “Come on, keep laughing!” which promptly brought out some chuckles from everyone around.
People who tried the primary course and experienced their first taste of Korean cuisine were pleased, irrespective of age. A young boy who sampled the sweet treat remarked, "This meal is incredibly tasty, and I would love to share it with my classmates at school."
In reply, Choi Hyun-seok stated, “Our chefs will also cater to Dina’s friends.” He added, “See you tomorrow.” On the other hand, Choi Daniel expressed his dissatisfaction saying, “It’s too rigid. They don’t even consider our input,” and mentioned there are as many as 100 classmates involved.
Choi Daniel remarked, “Aren’t you actually leaving? He felt awkward, and Ryu Soo-young ought to head out since she committed to doing so,” he added with a grin. Although Choi Hyun-seok stated, “A chef is someone who knows how to prepare dishes according to their flavor,” Choi Daniel didn’t look reassured.
For a brief moment, I thought about preparing something distinct using the roasted 'kui' guinea pig. Ryu Soo-young suggested trying either "braised spicy chicken" or "steamed chicken."
Later, Ryu Soo-young felt unjustified when he commented, “What sort of attire is this?” about the local purchase he was wearing uncomfortably. He exclaimed, “It cost 40,000 won!” Not like Jeon Hyun-moo who didn’t even bother with something under his clothing. You spent 40,000 won for nothing.”
To purchase 100 portions of kid-friendly ingredients, the quartet split into pairs for their trip to the nearby marketplace. Starting at 6:30 a.m., Choi Hyun-suk and Kim Ok-bin ventured out together, engaging with locals amidst the bustling bazaar. The variety was astounding; they found countless potatoes among many other items.
The four individuals who reached the educational institution were captivated by the charming landscape surrounding the school. Situated at an elevation of 3,550 meters above sea level, this institution holds the distinction of being the world’s highest school. Students from the Andean Elementary School grow up harmoniously with nature, under clear blue skies and amidst vast Andean grasslands which serve as both their rooftop and play area.
At the children’s cafeteria, the foursome opted to create meals featuring surprise ingredients such as steamed chicken and macaroni japchae. Dindin mentioned, “On a different show, I handled mass food distribution, and the toughest part was dealing with kids. They wouldn’t eat something simply because they didn’t like it, regardless of whether it was too salty, sweet, or anything else.”
Choi Daniel mentioned that he chose to prepare quesadillas. "Since I possess the tastes of an elementary school student, I believe I can excel at this." Demonstrating self-assurance, he added, “Every time I cook, there’s always a backstory involved. This particular recipe was one which turned out exceptionally well; despite our breakup, I found myself making it again just for how delightful it tasted.” The dish fondly became known as ‘the Ex-Girlfriend Quesadilla’.
Choi Daniel mentions, "Whenever I prepare this dish, I remember that particular friend. You're eager to find out about my ex-girlfriend, right? However, I am unable to disclose it, and Dindin playfully remarked, 'I genuinely have no interest.'"
Daniel Choi, using his poor eating habits as a pretext, told Jeon Hyun-moo, “You reached out to your former girlfriend.” He added,“If you want it to be impactful, you ought to record a video message,” prompting laughter from Choi Hyun-seok, who chimed in with,“That’s what you must do to progress further on the program.”
Despite being rescheduled, Choi Daniel expressed his gratitude by saying, "How have you been? Thanks for creating wonderful memories. I visited Peru recently and it reminded me of the cuisine there. Appreciate all your efforts." He conveyed this message through a video letter.
The school lunch got underway, and the children relished the meals, not feeling out of place with the new Korean cuisine.
