The launch represents a significant achievement for Shinsegae, which has revitalized the former Bank of Korea The warehouse—which has been designated as Seoul’s 71st tangible cultural property—is being transformed into a cultural complex that blends Korean heritage with contemporary luxury.
The restoration process, spanning more than ten years, maintained crucial architectural details such as the original floral-patterned plaster ceilings, while also incorporating contemporary design aspects, notably a curtain wall modeled after The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.
This multi-level area encompasses a 'Shinsegae Heritage House' located on the fifth floor, which highlights classic Korean handicrafts. On the fourth level, you can find a museum exhibiting historical items and photos from Myeong-dong’s period between the 1930s and 1950s. The initial two levels house a CHANEL store crafted by designer Peter Marino, signifying the first upscale label within a historically recognized structure in South Korea.
Founded in 1963, Shinsegae became South Korea's inaugural department store and has consistently set the pace for retail developments within the nation. Alongside international giants like Harrods from the UK and Isetan from Japan, it remains at the forefront of the industry.
